Patna : World No 34 Stan Wawrinka, 34, Switzerland, beat World No 7 Kei Nishikori, 29, Japan, in straight sets in the Round of 16 in Madrid Open, Spain, in a major upset in the tournament on May 9, 2019. Winner of three Grand Slam singles titles, Wawrinka beat Nishikori, the 6th seed, 6-3, 7-6 in the 3rd round to enter the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Wawrinka fired 9 Aces in the match to just 1 by Nishikori. His winning percentage on both his first and second serve (82% & 78 %) was much better than that of Nishikori ( 76% & 44%). Wawrinka won 1 break point besides winning three games in a row.

World No 3 and winner of 20 Grand Slam singles titles Roger Federer, 37, Switzerland, though survived a scare before defeating World No 18 Gael Monfils, 32, France, in a tough three-set contest in 2 hour in Round of 16 to reach the QFs.

Federer won the first set 6-0 but then lost the second set 4-6 and was trailing 1-4 in the third set. But, Federer rallied back strongly breaking Monfils’ service in the 7th game of 3rd set and finally won the third set 7-6. Federer beat Monfils 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 to reach the QFs. Fourth seed Federer has returned to clay court tournament after nearly 4 years.

Monfils fired 7 Aces in the match to 4 by Federer. Federer won 5 break points to 3 by Monfils. He won 6 games in a row to 5 by Monfils. Monfils committed 7 double faults to 2 by Federer.
