Patna : World No 3 Roger Federer, Switzerland, World No 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas, Greece, World No Kei Nishikori, Japan, and World No 13 Marin Cilic, Croatia, entered the 2nd round of French Open,  a Grand Slam tournament played on outdoor clay courts at Roland Garros, Paris, France, on May 26, 2019. But, World No 86 and India No 1 Prajnesh Gunneswaran lost in the first round to World No 92 Hugo Dellien, Bolivia, in straight sets.

Winner of 20 Grand Slam singles title and 3rd seed Federer beat World No 73 Lorenzo Sonego, 24, Italy, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. Federer, who had won the French Open title in 2009 and playing in the tournament after 3 years, broke Sonego’s service 5 times in the match while the latter broke his service just once. Federer also won 5 games in a row to 3 by Sonego. Federer fired 5 Aces in the match to 3 by Sonego.

Sixth seed Tsitsipas beat World No 110 Maximilian Marterer, 23, Germany, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 in the first round. Tsitsipas broke Marterer’s service 4 times in the match besides winning 3 games in a row. Marterer though fired 6 Aces in the match to 3 by Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas’ winning percentage both on his first and second serve (90% & 73 %) was much higher than that of Marterer (68 % & 46 %).

Nishikori, the 7th seed,  beat World No 153 Quentin Halys, 22, France, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in the first found. Nishikori broke Halys’ service 8 times in the match while the latter broke his service thrice. Nishikori won 4 games in a row to 2 by Halys. Halys though fired 6 Aces in the match to 3 by Nishikori. He, however, committed 10 double faults in the match to 6 by Nishikori.

Cilic, the 11th seed,  beat World No 98 Thomas Fabbiano, 29, Italy, 6-3, 7-5, 6-1 in the first round hammering 13 Aces. Cilic broke Fabbianos’ service 8 times in the match while the latter broke his service thrice. Cilic won 6 games in a row to 2 by Fabbiano.

World No 47 Grigor Dimitrov, Bulgaria, entered the 2nd round defeating World No 317 Janko Tipsarevic, 34, Serbia, in five-sets thriller 6-3, 6-0, 3-6, 6-7, 6-4 in the first round. Dimitrov hammered 12 Aces in the match to 3 by Tipsarevic. He, however, committed 8 double faults in the match to 4 by Tipsarevic. Dimitrov broke Tipsarevic’s service 9 time in the match while the latter broke his service 5 times. Dimitrov won 11 games in a row in the match to 3 by Tipsarevic.

Dellien swept aside Gunneswaran in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 in the first round winning 5 games in a row. Dellien broke Gunneswaran’s service 6 times in the match. He also served 5 Aces in the match to 2 by Gunneswaran.
