Patna : Six-time champion & World No 3 Roger Federer, 38, Switzerland, survived Tennys Sandgren scare to reach the semi-finals of Australian Open (AO) 2020 at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on January 28, 2020. Federer, winner of 20 Grand Slam titles, edged past World No 100 Tennys Sandgre, 28, USA, in a five-set encounter 6-3, 2-6, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 in 3 hr 31 minutes in quarter-finals at Rod Laver Arena.

Third seed Federer, who has won 103 career titles, was down two sets to one after third set and was trailing 3-6  in the fourth set tie-break, battled back to win the fourth and fifth set to reach the semi-finals of AO 2020. Sandgren, who was appearing in AO quarter-finals for the second successive year, hammered 27 Aces in the match to just 5 by the Swiss. He, however, also committed 5 double faults to 3 by 3rd seed Federer.

Sandgren, who has won only 1 career title, won 4 break points in the match to 2 by Federer, who was seen arguing with the chair umpire during the match. The American also won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by the Swiss. But, Federer won 111 service points to 101 by the American, who gave the World No 3 a torrid time in the court.
