Patna : World No 2 and top seed Roger Federer, 37, Switzerland, World No 12 Kei Nishikori, 28, Japan, World No 19 Borna Coric, 21, Croatia, and World No 51 Matthew Ebden, 30, Australia, entered the quarter-finals of Shanghai Masters tennis championship, an ATP world tour 1,000 points event played on hard courts at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Minhang, Shanghai, China.
Federer beat World No 28 Roberto Bautista Agut, 30, Spain, in a tough three-set contest 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in the Round of 16. Agut fired 9 Aces in the match to 7 by Federer. Both the players won 3 break points each. Federer won 4 games in a row to 3 by Agut. Federer’s winning percentage on both his first and second serve was slightly better than that of Agut.
Nishikori beat World No 57 Sam Querrey, 31, USA, 7-6, 6-4 in the Round of 16. Querrey though fired 16 Aces in the match to just 5 by Nishikori. Querrey’s winning percentage on both his first and second serve was also better than that of Nishikori. Nishikori, however, won one break point to none by Querrey. Nishikori won 3 games in a row in the match. Nishikori will play Federer in the quarter-finals.
Ebden beat World No 68 Peter Gojowczyk, 29, Germany, 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 16. Ebden fired 15 Aces in the match to 3 by Gojowczyk. Ebden also won 3 break points besides winning 7 games in a row.
Coric progressed to quarter-finals after World No 4 and 3rd seed Juan Martin del Porto, 30, Argentina, retired due to injury trailing 1 set to zero. Coric had won the first set 7-5. Corin will play Ebden in the quarter-finals.
