Federer, Medvedev, Fognini enter Round of 16 of Rolex Shanghai Masters

Patna :  Second seed Roger Federer, 38, Switzerland, 3rd seed Daniil Medvedev, 23, Russia, 10th seed Fabio Fognini, 32, Italy, World No 34 Hubert Hurkacz, 22, Poland, and World No 248 Vasek Pospisil, 29, Canada, entered the Round of 16 of Rolex Shanghai Masters at Shanghai, China, on October 9, 2019.

World No 2 Federer beat World No 46 Albert Ramos-Vinolas, 31, Spain, 6-2, 7-6 in 84 minutes in second round winning 2 break points in the match besides a tiebreak. Federer also won 5 games in a row in the match. He fired 8 Aces in the match to 7 by Vinolas.

World No 4 Medvedev, the US Open finalist this year, crushed World No 64 Careron Norrie, 24, UK, a qualifier, 6-3, 6-1 in just 54 minutes firing 9 Aces to enter the Round of 16. Medvedev also won 4 break points besides winning 5 games in a row in the match.

Fognini edges past World No 289 but winner of three Grand Slam titles Andy Murray, 32, UK, in three-set slugfest lasting 3hr 9 minutes to enter Round of 16.in  and winner. World No 12 Fognini beat Murray 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 in 2nd round. Murray was leading 6-5 in the 3rd set and was serving for the match but Fognini broke his service to take the match into tiebreaker. Fognini easily won the tiebreaker (7-2).

Huekacz upset World No 11 Gael Monfils, 33, France, 6-2, 7-6 in 2nd round in 76 minutes. Both the players 6 Aces each in the match. Hurkacz won 2 break points besides winning 3 games in a row in the match. Hurkacz won 44 service points to 40 by Monfils, the 9th seed.

Pospisil, a qualifier, upset World No 63 Joao Sousa, 30, Portugal, beat 6-3, 7-5 in 2nd round winning 2 break points in the match besides winning 3 games in a row. Pospisil fired 15 Aces in the match to 2 by Sousa. Pospisil will face Medvedev in Round of 16 on October 10, 2019.

World No 26 Nikoloz Basilashvili, 27, Georgia, beat World No 23 Benoit Paire, 30, France, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 in 1hr 37 minutes in 2nd round. The Georgian won 3 break points in the match to 2 by Paire. Basilashvili, the 15th seed, won 3 games in a row in the match to 5 by Paire, who fired 11Aces in the match. Basilashvili could serve only 2 Aces.
