Patna : World No 1 in ATP rankings and top Roger Federer, 36, Switzerland, defeated World No 48 Benoit Paire, 29, France, in a three-set thriller 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, in the Round of 16 to enter the quarter-finals of Halle Open Championship, Germany, an ATP 500 event played on Grass Court.
Paire gave a very tough run to Federer in the match and at one stage had a match in the third set tie-breaker. Paire fired 9 Aces in the match compared to 7 by Federer. But, Paire committed three double faults. Both the players won two break points each.
World No 34 Borna Coric, 21, Croatia, also entered the quarter-finals defeating World No 85 Nikoloz Basilashvili, 26, Georgia, 6-4, 6-2 in the Round of 16.Coric fired 7 Aces during the match compared to 3 by Basilashvili. Basilashvili, however, committed 6 double faults to one by Coric. Coric won three break points.
World No 60 Matthew Ebden, 30, Australia, defeated World No 24 Philipp Kohlschreiber, 34, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, to enter the quarter-finals of the tournament. Ebden fired 7 Aces in the match to just 2 by Kohlschreiber. Both the players committed 3 double faults each.
