Patna : England restricted Australia to a modest 223 all out in 49 overs in the 2nd semi-finals at Edgbaston, Birmingham, England, on July 11, 2019, with Steven Smith scoring 85 in 119 balls hitting 6 fours and Alex Carey (wk) scoring 46 in 70 balls with 4 fours. For England, fast bowler Chris Woakes took 3/20 in 8 overs while spinner Adil Rashid took 3/54 in 10 overs. Jofra Archer took 2/32 in 10 overs while Mark Wood took 1/45 in 9 overs. Smith was run out.

Opting to bat after winning the toss, Australia lost their first three wickets that of openers : David Warner and Aaron Finch (captain), and Peter Handscomb for just 14 runs. Warner fell to Chris Woakes for 9 while Finch fell to Jofra Archer for a duck. Handscomb also fell to Woakes for 4. But, Smith and Alex Carey steadied the innings adding 103 runs for the 4th wicket. Carey fell to Adil Rashid making it 117/4. Marcus Stoinis was next to go making it 118/5. Stoinis fell to Rashid for Zero.

Smith and Glen Maxwell added 39 runs for the 6th wicket. Maxwell fell to Archer for 22 with 2 fours and a six making it 157/6. Fast bowler Pat Cummins fell to Rashid for 6 and it was 166/7. Smith and fast bowler Mitchell Starc then added 51 runs for the 8th wicket. Smith was run out making it 217/8. Strac fell to Chris Woakes for 29 in 36 balls with a four and a six at the same score and it was 217/9. Fast bowler Jason Behrendorff fell to Mark Wood for 1.
