Patna : Chasing a target of 376 runs, England were 121/1 in 41 overs in their second innings in 1st Test against South Africa (SA) at stumps on Day 3 on December 28, 2019, at SuperSport Park, Centurion, South Africa, with opener Rory Burns unbeaten on 77 in 117 balls hitting 11 fours and Joe Denly batting on 10 in 39 balls with 1 four. Opener Dominic Sibley fell to spinner Keshav Maharaj for 29 in 90 balls with 5 four. Rory Burns and Sibley added 92 runs for the first wicket. England, who had scored 181 in their first innings, still need 255 runs to win this test.
Earlier resuming at their overnight score of 72/4 , South Africa were all out for 272 in 61.4 overs in their second innings on Day 3 with Rassie van der Dussen scoring 51 and fast bowler Anrich Nortje scoring 40. Rassie van der Dussen and Nortje added 91 runs for the 5th wicket. Dussen fell to England fast bowler Jofra Archer making it 153/5. Nortje also fell to Archer and it was 170/6. Dwaine Pretorius fell to all-rounder Ben Stokes for 7 making it 177/7.
Quinton de Kock and pacer Vernon Philander, who will retire from international cricket after this series, then added 43 runs for the 8th wicket. Quinton de Kock fell to Stokes for 34 in 37 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes, all three of Jofra Archer, and it was 220/8. Keshav Maharaj also fell to Archer for 11 and it was 250/9. Philander fell to Sam Curran for 46 in 68 balls with 4 fours. Kagiso Rabada remained unbeaten on 16 in 12 balls with 2 fours and a six.SA had scored 284 in their 1st innings.
For England, Jofra Archer took 5/102 in 17 overs while Ben Stokes took 2/22 in 8 overs. James Anderson, Stuart Broad, and Sam Curran took one wicket each
