Patna : England demolished India by a massive 227 runs in the first test at M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Tamilnadu, on day 5 on February 9, 2021, to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match test series. England captain Joe Root, who scored 218 runs in first innings and 40 runs in second, was named Player Of the Match. England had defeated Sri Lanka 2-0 recently. Root has won 26 tests as captain. Virat Kohli has lost his last 4 tests as captain.
Set a target of 420 runs to win the match, India folded up for only 192 runs in their second innings with opener Shubman Gill scoring 50 in 83 balls with 7 fours and 1 six and captain Virat Kohli scoring 72 in 104 balls with 9 fours. Resuming at their overnight score of 39/1, India soon lost the wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara. Pujara fell to spinner Jack Leach for 15 making it 58/2. Shubman Gill was bowled by James Anderson for 50 and it was 92/3. At the same score vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane was also bowled by Anderson for zero and it was 92/4.

Three Indian batsmen : Ajinkya Rahane, Washington Sundar, and Shahbaz Nadeem , were out for in second innings. It was a pathetic display of batting by the Indians. India had scored 337 runs in their first innings.
