Patna : England were 86/1 in their first innings at lunch on Day 1 of the 5th Ashes Test against Australia at Kennington Oval, London, on September 12, 2019, with opener Rory Burns unbeaten on 42 in 71 balls hitting 6 fours and captain Joe Root batting on 28 in 53 balls with 2 fours.

Burns and Root have so far added 59 runs for the 2nd wicket. Opener Joe Denly fell to fast bowler Pat Cummins for 14 with 2 fours when the team score was 27. Australia won the toss but opted to bowl. Root was dropped twice off the bowling of Pat Cummins.

England dropped Jason Roy and fast bowler Craig Overton for the 5th test and brought in Sam Curran and Chris Woakes. Australia, who lead the five-match series 2-1, dropped Travis Head and Mitchell Starc for this test and brought in Mitchell Marsh and Peter Siddle.
