Patna : England were 55/3 at stumps on Day 4 in their second innings in 1st test against New Zealand (NZ) at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, struggling to save the test. Still trailing by 207 runs, England can either draw the test or lose it on Day 5. All the three England wickets: openers Rory Burns (31), Dominic Sibley(12), and spinner Jack Leach(0), were claimed by NZ spinner Mitchell Santner. England had scored 353 in 124 overs in their first innings.
Earlier resuming at their overnight score of 394/6, NZ declared their first innings at 615/9 in 201 overs with B J Watling (wk) scoring 205 in 473 balls, his 8th test century and first double ton, with 24 fours and a six, and spinner Mitchell Santner scoring 126 in 269 balls with 11 fours and 5 sixes, his maiden test ton. It is NZ’s highest score in tests against England. Watling’s score is also highest by a NZ wicketkeeper in tests. Watling, 34, and Santner added 261 runs for the 7th wicket. Santner fell to Sam Curran. Watling fell to fast bowler Jofra Archer, the last NZ batsman to get out. NZ took a first innings lead of 262 runs.
For England, Sam Curran took 3/119 while Ben Stokes took 2/74. Jofra Archer took 1/107 while Jack Leach took 2/153. England captain Joe Root took 1/67.
