Patna : Chasing a target of 482 runs, England were 53/3 after 19 overs in their second innings at stumps on Day 3 in 2nd test against India at M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Tamilnadu, on February 15, 2021, with captain Joe Root batting on 2 and Daniel Lawrence unbeaten on 19 with 2 fours. Spinner Axar Patel has taken 2/15 in 9 overs while fellow spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who had taken 5/43 in England’s first innings, has taken 1/28 in 8 overs. England need to score 429 runs more to win this test with two days’ play still left.

England lost their first wicket that of opener Dominic Sibley in second innings at 17. Sibley fell lbw to Axar Patel for 3 making it 17/1. His opening partner Rory Burns fell to Ravichandran Ashwin for 25 in 42 balls with 4 fours and it was 49/2. Spinner Jack Leach fell to Patel for zero and it was 50/3.

Incidentally, on the same pitch, India scored 232 runs on the day with Ashwin scoring 106 in 148 balls with 14 fours and 1 six, his 5th test ton. Even Mohd Siraj hit 2 sixes in his unbeaten 16 in 21 balls though the top order batsmen found it extremely difficult to negotiate turn and bounce in the first session of the play on Day 3 and India lost 5 wickets in that session.

India were all out for 286 in their 2nd innings. They had scored 329 in their first innings. England had scored 134 in their first innings.
