Patna : England were struggling at 53/3 in 17 overs in their first innings at stumps on Day 1 in the 4th test against India having lost the wickets of both the openers : Rory Burns (5) and Haseeb Hameed (0), and captain Joe Root (21). Dawid Malan was unbeaten on 26 in 46 balls with 4 fours while fast bowler Craig Overton was 1 not out at stumps on Day 1.

For India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah took 2/15 in 6 overs while fellow fast bowler Umesh Yadav took 1/15 in 6 overs. Bumrah took the wickets of both the England openers in his second over, the 4th of the innings. Umesh Yadav bowled Joe Root with a great delivery.

Earlier, India were all out for 191 in 61.3 overs in the their first innings with Shardul Thakur scoring 57 runs in 36 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes and captain Virat Kohli scoring 50 runs. England fast bowler Chris Woakes took 4/55 while Ollie Robinson took 3/38.

India dropped fast bowler Ishant Sharma and Mohd Shami due to injury and brought in Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav in the 4th test.
