Pagna : England were 528/8 in their first innings in the third session of play on Day 2 in the 1st test against India at M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Tamilnadu, on February 6, 2021, as captain Joe Root scored 218 in 377 balls with 19 fours and 2 sixes, his 3rd double century in last three tests and 5th overall, while all-rounder Ben Stokesed 82 in 118 balls with 10 fours and 3 sixes. Root and Ben Stokes added 124 runs for the 4th wicket. Root had scored 228 in 1st test against Sri Lanka in January 2021.

Resuming at their overnight score of 263/3, England lost the wicket of Stokes at 387. Stokes fell to spinner Shahbaz Nadeem. Ollie Pope fell to spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for 34 and it was 473/5. Root and Pope added 86 runs for the 5th wicket.

Root fell to Nadeem for 218 making it 477/6. Jos Buttler (wk) fell to fast bowler Ishant Sharma for 30 and it was 525/7. Fast bowler Jofra Archer also fell to Ishant Sharmafor zero  at the same score and it was 525/8.
