Patna : England were 39/4 after 18 overs in their first innings at lunch on Day 2 in the 2nd test against India on February 14, 2021, at M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Tamilnadu, as spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has taken 2/15 in 9 overs fellow spinner Axar Patel and fast bowler Ishant Sharma have taken one wicket each.India lead by 290 runs.
England had a horrible start to their first innings losing their first wicket that of opener Rory Burns with no on board. Rory Burns fell lbw to Ishant Sharma on the third ball of the first over making it 0/1. Opener Dominic Sibley fell to Ravichandran ashwin for 16 and it was 16/2. Captain Joe Root, who had scored double century in 1st test, fell to debutant Axar Patel for 6 and it was 23/3. Daniel Lawrence fell to Ashwin for 9 making it 39/4 in 18 overs.
Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 300/6, India were all out for 329 in 95.5 overs in their first innings losing their last 4 wickets for only 29 runs. Rishabh Pant (wk) remained unbeaten on 58 in 77 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. Four Indian batsmen: Shubman Gill, Virat kohli ( captain), Ishant Sharma, and Kuldeep Yadav, were out for duck in the first innings.
For England, spinner Moeen Ali took 4/128 in 29 overs while fast bowler Olly Stone took 3/47 in 15.5 overs. Spinner Jack Leach took 2/78 in 27 overs while captain Joe Root took 1/23 in 11 overs.
