Patna : England were 262/9 in 89 overs at stumps in their first innings in the 2nd test against South Africa (SA) at Newlands, Capetown, South Africa, on Day 1 on January 3, 2020, with Ollie Pope unbeaten on 56 in 132 balls hitting 7 fours and James Anderson unbeaten on 3.

South Africa fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Dwaine Pretorius, and Vernons Philander took two wickets each while spinner Keshav Maharaj took one wicket. England won the toss and opted to bat. SA leads 1-0 in the four-test series.

England lost their first wicket that of opener Zak Crawley at 8. Crawley fell to Vernon Philander for 4. Dominic Sibley and Joe Denly then added 55 runs for the 2nd wicket. Sibley fell to Kagiso Rabada for 34 in 76 balls with 7 fours making it 63/2. Captain Joe Root fell to Anrich Nortje for 35 in 49 balls with 5 fours and it was 105/3. Joe Denly fell to spinner Keshav Maharaj for 38 in 130 balls with 5 fours making it 127/4.

All-rounder Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope added 58 runs for the 5th wicket. Stokes fell to Nortje for 47 in 77 balls with 6 fours and six and it was 185/5. Jos Buttler (wk) fell to Pretorius for 29 in 27 balls with 4 fours and a six and it was 216/6. Sam Curran also fell to Pretorius for 9 and it was 231/7. Dominic Bess fell to Philander for a duck making it 231/8. Stuart Broad fell to Rabada for 1 and it was 234/9.
