Patna : England were 241/4 in 90 overs in their first innings at stumps on Day 1 in the first test against New Zealand (NZ) at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, on November 21, 2019, with all-rounder Ben Stokes unbeaten on 67 in 114 balls hitting 9 fours and Ollie Pops batting on 18 in 23 balls with 4 fours. England won the toss and elected to bat.

England openers Rory Burns and Dominic Sibley gave a good start to their team with a 52 run first wicket stand. Sibley fell to Colin de Grandhomme for 22 in 63 balls with 4 fours when the team score was 52. Burns also fell to Grandhomme for 52 in 138 balls with 6 fours making it 113/2. Burns and Joe Denly added 61 runs for the second wicket. Captain Joe Root fell to pacer Neil Wagner for 2 and it was 120/3.

Denly and Stokes then added 83 runs for the 4th wicket. Denly fell to Tim Southee for 74 in 181 balls with 8 fours and a six and it was 203/4. Stokes and Pope have so far added 38 runs in their unbroken 5th wicket stand. Stokes hit fast bowler Trent Boult for 4 consecutive fours in 85th over.

For NZ, Colin de Grandhomme has taken 2/28 in 19 overs while Tim Southee has taken 1/46 in 21 overs. Neil Wagner has taken 1/77 in 23 overs.
