Patna : England were 201/6 in 61 overs in their first innings at tea on Day 1 of the 2nd Ashes Test against Australia at Lord’s, London, with Jonny Bairstow ( wk) unbeaten on 36 hitting 5 fours and all-rounder Chris Woakes  batting on 25 with 3 fours. Australia won the toss but opted to bowl. Australia lead the five-match Ashes Series 1-0.

England made a disastrous start losing their first wicket that of Jason Roy with no run on board. Roy fell to fast bowler Josh Hazlewood. They lost their second wicket that of captain Joe Root (14) when the score was 26. But opener Rory Burns, who had scored century in 1st test, added 66 runs with Joe Deny (30) for the third wicket. Deny fell to fast bowler Josh Hazlewood. Rory Burns fell to fast bowler pat Cummins for 53 runs in 127 balls with 7 fours making it 116/4. Jos Buttler fell to fast bowler Peter Siddle for 12 while all-rounder Ben Stokes fell to spinner Nathan Lyon for 13 making it 138/6 in 45.2 overs.
