Patna : England were 193/2 in their second innings at tea on Day 3 in the 5th Ashes Test against Australia at Kennington Oval, London, on September 14, 2019, night, with opener Joe Denly unbeaten on 82 in 187 balls hitting 13 fours and a six, his 3rd fifty in the series, and all-rounder Ben Stokes batting on 57 in 100 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes. Denly and Stokes have added 106 runs for the 3rd wicket in their unbroken partnership. England lead by 262 runs and clearly have an upper hand in the match.
Resuming at their overnight score of 9/0, England lost their first wicket at 54 when opener Rory Burns fell to spinner Nathan Lyon for 20. Captain Joe Root too fell to Lyon for 21 making it 87/2. Both Deny and Stokes were particularly severe on spinner Lyon. Deny hit a four and a six on consecutive balls in Lyon’s first over while Stokes hit him for two fours and a six on consecutive balls in his 12th over.
England had scored 294 in their first innings while Australia were all out for 225 in their first innings. Australia had won the toss but opted to bowl.
