Patna : Captain Joe Root, 30, scored an unbeaten 105 in 153 balls with 14 fours, his 19th test century, as England raced to 181/4 in their first innings at lunch on Day 3 in the 2nd test against Sri Lanka (SL) at Galle International Stadium, Galle, SL, on January 24, 2021. Joe Root’s batting has been a masterclass against spin bowling in this series. He had scored a double century in 1st test, which England won.  Jos Buttler (wk) was batting on 30 in 49 balls with 4 fours at lunch.

Resuming at their overnight score of 98/1, England added 83 runs in the first session of play on Day 3 losing the wickets of Jonny Bairstow (28) and Daniel Lawrence (3) in the first hour of play. SL spinner Lasith Embuldeniya took both the wickets. He has claimed all the four England wickets.

Joe Root and Buttler have added 49 runs so far in their unbroken partnership for the 5th wicket. England though still trail by 200 runs.
