Patna : England were bundled out for only 58 runs in 20.4 overs by New Zealand bowlers on the first day of the first cricket test at Eden Park, Auckland, New Zealand, on March 22, 2018, with fast bowlers Trent Boult taking 6/32 in 10.4 overs and Tim Southee taking 4/25 in 10 overs respectively. In fact, the 9th England wicket fell when the score was only 27.

All rounder Craig Overton, 23, was top scorer for England scoring an unbeaten 33 in 25 balls with 5 fours and a six. It is 9th day night test, the first being played in New Zealand. New Zealand had won the toss but opted to bowl first, a decision which rocked England. It is a two-test series.

England captain Joe Root was out for a duck while Alastair Cook made 5. All rounder Ben Stokes, wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, and Moeen Ali were also out for duck. Dawid Malan was out for 2 only.

Replying to the England total, New Zealand were 175/3 in 69 overs at stumps with Captain Kane Williamson bating on 91 and Henry Nicholls batting on 24. Former captain Ross Taylor was out for 20 while Tom Latham was out for 26. England fast bowler Stuart Broad took his 400th test wicket by taking the wicket of Tom Latham.
