Patna : Captain Joe Root scored 124, his 15th test century, as England reached 324/9  at stumps on day 3 in their second innings in the second test against Sri Lanka at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele, Sri Lanka, on November 16, 2018. Opener Rory Burns scored 59 while Jos Buttler made 34. Keaton Jennings scored 26 but all-rounder Ben Stokes was out for a duck. Moeen Ali made 10. Wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, who had scored ton in the first test, was batting on 51 and James Anderson on 4 at stumps on day 3. For Sri Lanka, spinner Akila Dananjaya took 6/106 in 23 overs. England lead by 278 runs.

Sri Lanka were all out for 336 in 103 overs in their first innings with opener Dimuth Karunaratne getting run out for 63 while Dhananjaya de Silva scored 59. Roshen Silva scored 85 with 4 fours and a six while Akila Dananjaya made 31. For England, Jack Leach took 3/70 and moeen Ali 2/85. Spinner Adil Rashid took 3/75. Joe Root took 1/26.

England had scored 290 in their first innings with Jos Buttler scoring 63 and all-rounder Sam Curran 64. Rory Burns made 43.
