Patna : Electing to bat first after winning the toss, England were 233/5 in 81.4 overs at stumps on day one in the fifth and final Ashes test at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, Australia, on January 4, 2018, with Dawid Malan unbeaten on 55.

England Captain Joe Root was for out for 83 in 141 balls hitting 8 fours while former Captain and opener Alastair Cook scored 39. Another opener Mark Stoneman scored 24 while James Vince made 25. Root and Malan were involved in fourth wicket partnership of  133 runs. For Australia, Pat Cummins took 2/44 while Josh Hazlewood took 2/47. Mitchell Starc took 1/63.
