New Delhi : The Election Commission of India (ECI) will issue notification regarding election to office of Vice-President of India on July 4, 2017.  The 15th Vice-Presidential election, if necessary,  will be held on August 5, 2017. The term of present of office of present Vice-President of India, Mohd Hamid Ansari, is up to August 10, 2017.

The Vice-President is elected by the members of the Electoral College consisting of the members of both Houses of Parliament in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. The nominated Members of Rajya Sabha  as well as  of Lok Sabha are also eligible to be included in the Electoral College and, therefore, are entitled to participate in the election, according to a PIB release. The Election Commission, in consultation with the Central Government, has decided to appoint the Secretary General to the Rajya Sabha as the Returning Officer for the election.
