Djokovic routs Nadal to win 7th Australian Open title

Patna :  World No 1 Novak Djokovic, 31, Serbia, beat World No 2 Rafael Nadal, 32, Spain, in a one sided match in the final to win his 7th Australian Open title on January 27, 2019, his 3rd consecutive Grand Slam titles after Wimbledon 2018 and US Open 2o18. Djokovic routed a completely off colour Nadal 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in the Australian Open (AO) final at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, to win his 15th Grand Slam title. Djokovic won the first set in 36 minutes.

Nadal failed to break Djokovic’s service even once though he had few break points. Nadal failed to find his rhythm and timing. Djokovic fired 8 Aces in the match to 3 by Nadal, who committed 2 double faults. Djokovic won 5 break points besides winning 5 games in a row in the match. Djokovic’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 80% & 84 %) was much higher than that of Nadal ( 51 % & 67 %).

In contrast, World No 19 Daniil Medvedev, 22, Russia, had taken Djokovic to four sets in their Round of 16 match at AO 2019 while World No 27 Denis Shapova;lov, 19, Canada, had taken him to four sets in their Round of 32 match.

Djokovic and Nadal were playing in the 25th final, 8th in the Grand Slam, against each other. They had last played in the Australian Open final in 2012 when Djokovic had prevailed in 5hrs 15 minutes. Djokovic now leads Nadal 28-25 head to head. Djokovic had won his first Australian Open title in 2008.
