Djokovic enters 3rd round of Shanghai Masters, Cilic & Thiem upset

Patna : World No 3 in ATP rankings Novak Djokovic, 31, Serbia, and World No 19 Borna Coric, 21, Croatia, entered the third round of Shanghai Masters tennis championship, an ATP World Tour 1,000 points event played on hard courts in Shanghai, China, but World No 6 Marin Cilic, 30, Croatia, and World No 7 Dominic Thiem, 25, Austria, suffered shock defeats.

Winner of 14 Grand Slam singles titles and reigning Wimbledon and US Open Champion Novak Djokovic beat World No 41 Jeremy Chardy, 31, France, 6-3, 7-5 in the second round. Second seed Djokovic won 3 break points in the match to none by Chardy. Djokovic committed 2 double faults compared to 3 by his rival. Chardy served 7 Aces to 4 by Djokovic, who also won three games in a row.

Coric defeated World No 104 Bradley Klahn, 28, USA, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. Coric, who had defeated winner of three Grand Slam singles titles and World No 69 Stan Wawrinka in the first round, won 3 break points in the match besides 5 games in a row. Klahn committed 3 double faults. Klahn, however, served 6 Aces to 4 by Coric.

But, World No 48 Nicolas Jarry, 22, Chile, stunned Cilic, a former US Open Champion, in a three set encounter 2-6, 7-6, 7-5 in the second round in a massive upset in the tournament. Cilic fired 17 Aces in the match to 15 by Jarry. Cilic, however, committed 6 double faults to none by Jarry. Cilic won 3 break points while Jarry won 2. Jarry won 4 games in a row while his rival won 3. Jarry is yet to win an ATP singles title.

World No 51 Matthew Ebden, 30, Australia, shocked World No 7 Dominic Thiem defeating him in a three-set thriller 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 in the second round in another major upset in the tournament. Ebden fired 14 Aces in the match to 11 by Thiem. Both the players committed 3 double faults each. Ebden won 4 break points while Thiem won 3. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match.

World No 68 Peter Gojowczyk, 29, Germany, also entered the 3rd round beating World No 42 Marton Fucsovics, 26, Hungary, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 in the second round. Fucsovics, however, hammered 14 Aces in the match to 7 by Gojowczyk.
