Patna : World No 1 and top seed Novak Djokovic, Serbia, and World No 11 Marin Cilic Croatia, the 9th seed,  advanced to the 3rd round of Madrid Open, Spain, on May 7, 2019. But, World No28  Lucas Pouille, France, upset World No 15 Borna Coric, 22, Croatia, in the first round.

Djokovic beat World No 57 Taylor Fritz, 21, USA, 6-4, 6-2 in the 2nd round in 65 minutes. Djokovic broke Fritz’s service thrice in the match. He also won 7 games in a row during the match to 4 by Fritz. Djokovic fired 7 Aces in the match to 4 by Fritz. Djokovics’ winning percentage on both his first and second serve (85% & 90%) was much better than that of Fritz (63% & 50 %).

Cilic beat World No 49 Jan-Lenard Struff, 29, Germany, in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in 2 hours to enter the 3rd round. Cilic fired 7 Aces in the match to 11 by Struff. Cilic committed 4 double faults in the match to 2 by Struff. But, Cilic won 2 break points to just 1 by Struff. Cilic won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by Struff. Cilic won 64 service points to 55 by Struff.

World No 144 David Ferrer, 37, Spain, upset World No 21 Roberto Bautista Agut, 31, Spain, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to enter the 2nd round. World No 34 Stan Wawrinka, 34, Switzerland, beat World No 41 Pierre Hugues Herbert, 28, France, 6-2, 6-3 to enter the 2nd round. Wawrinka broke Herbert’s service thrice in the match besides winning three games in a row.

Lucas Pouille beat Coric 6-3, 7-5 in the first round. Pouille broke Coric’s service thrice in the match while the latter broke his service only once. Coric fired 7 Aces in the match to 6 by Pouille.
