Dimitrov upsets Cilic to enter 3rd round of French Open

Patna : World No 46 Grigor Dimitrov, 28, Bulgaria, edged past World No 13 Marin Cilic, 30, Croatia, in a five-set thriller at Roland Garros, Paris, France, to move into the third round of French Open on May 29, 2019, night. World No 60 Filip Krajinovic, 27, Serbia, also entered the third round defeating World No 76 Roberto Caralles Baena, 27, Spain, in a five-set encounter.

Dimitrov beat 11th seed Cilic 6-7, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the 2nd round. Dimitrov, who had reached Wimbledon semi-finals in 2014 and US Open semi-finals in 2017, broke Cilic’s service 5 times in the match while the latter broke his service thrice in the match.  Dimitrov, a former World No 3, hammered 15 Aces in the match to 13 by Cilic, the 2014 US Open Champion. Cilic had reached Wimbledon final in 2017 and Australian Open final in 2018.

Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match. Both the players also committed 10 double faults each. Cilic had reached French Open QFs in 2017 and  2018. Dimitrov will face 2015 French Open champion Stan Wawrinka, Switzerland, in the 3rd round.

Krajinovic beat Baena 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 3-6, 8-6 in the second round. Krajinovic won 9 break points to 8 by Baena. Both the players won 4 games each in a row. Baena fired 10 Aces in the match to 6 by Krajinovic. Baena committed 8 double faults in the match to none by the Serbian. Krajinovic had also won his first round match in five-sets. He will face World No 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 3rd round.

World No 78 Juan Ignacio Londero, 25, Argentina, defeated World No 39 Richard Gasquet, 32, France, in four-sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to enter the 3rd round. Both the players fired 6 Aces each in the match. Londero won 5 break points to 2 by Gasquet, who had reached French Open QFs in 2016.
