Dhanbad  ( Jharkhand) :  Dhanbad police with Transport department  officials on January 17 joined hands with Rotary club (central), Dhanbad, and adopted Gandhigiri at Puja Talkies to teach lessons to road rule flouters offering helmets to those not wearing helmets  besides  giving  flowers and garlands  rather than penalizing them.

Aware of increasing accidents  in  the district, which  in 2016 claimed more than 109  lives, Dhanbad city SP Anshuman Kumar, traffic DSP Ashok Kumar Tirkey , Dhanbad DTO R R Sharma along with Rotary club  senior officers including Amresh Singh , Dipak Kanuadia  gave gifts, flowers  besides giving tips  to commuters  and those found flouting traffic rules including driving without helmets or without driving licenses,  going triple loading on two -wheelers  and driving cars without safety belts were presented with flowers  and even garlanded in presence of smiling  hundreds of people.

It was first time in history of Dhanbad that those driving two- wheelers  without helmets were gifted with  helmets (courtesy Rotary club central Dhanbad). Altogether 110 helmets were distributed to  helmet less drivers while several others were given flowers  which were handed over to the rule flouters by girls of Carmel school.  Starting at 11 am, this  action continued till about 2 pm in which more than 145 persons were found flouting traffic rules  which even included elder couples and teenagers.

City  SP, Dhanbad, Anshuman Kumar  stated that ‘Road Safety Week’ is an event that highlights the devastation of road death and injury. “It’s all about common masses  including women , school children and youths  working together to raise awareness about road safety, promote responsible road use, and prevent the suffering that results from crashes and casualties,” he said.

‘We will be taking   very stern action against traffic rule flouters from next week,  as presently we are trying to educate masses  offering them flowers  pleading them to follow road rules  but  now rule flouters must get ready to face music,” said SP Kumar.

Director of Rotary club Amresh Singh said that his organization has played positive role in eradication  of polio or going forward for literacy movement but seeing  several lives being lost in road accident due to negligence and rule flouting, they decided to donate helmets from their own funds and educate masses. Traffic DSP Ashok Kumar Tirkey said that the people are being educated  to follow traffic rules strictly.“ After  safety week comes to an end, cops will launch drive to catch traffic rule flouters and impose fine on them,” said DSP Singh.
