Patna : World No 47 in Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings Subhankar Dey, 25, India, stunned World No 8 and reigning Asian Games men’s singles gold medallist Jonatan Christie, 21, Indonesia, in three- games in the second round of Yonex Swiss Open at St Jakobshalle Basel, Basel, Switzerland, on March 14, 2019, evening, to enter the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Dey beat 5th seed Christie 12-21, 22-20, 21-17 in 71 minutes in the second round causing a major upset in the tournament. Christie though won 58 rallies to 55 by Dey. Dey won 6 consecutive points in the match to 5 by Christie. Christie leads Dey 2-1 head to head. Dey will play World No 5 and reigning Olympic gold medallist Chen Long, 30, China, in the QFs on March 15, 2019.
World No 22 B Sai Praneeth, 26, India, upset World No 14 and 8th seed Sameer Verma, 24, India, 21-14, 22-20 in 47 minutes in the second to reach quarter-finals of the event. Praneeth will face World No 52 Lucas Corvee, 25, France, in the QFs on March 15.
