Patna : World No 14 Denis Shapovalov, 22, Canada, sent reigning Olympic champion and World No 3 Alexander Zverev, 24, Germany, packing out of Australian Open (AO) 2022 defeating him in straight sets in men’s singles 4th round on Margaret Court Arena at Melbourne Park, Australia, on January 23, 2022.

14th seed Shapovalov beat Zverev, the 2021 ATP World Tour Finals winner, 8-3, 7-6, 6-3 in 4th round. The Canadian won 4 break points during the match to 2 by Zverev, the 2020 AO semi-finalist. Both the players served 3 Aces each during the match. Shapovalov won 5 games in a row during the match to 3 by the 3rd seed German.

The Canadian, however, committed 11 double faults to 8 by the German. Shapovalov, in all, won 104 points to 88 points by the German, the winner of 19 career titles. Shapovalov, who had reached Wimbledon semi-finals in 2021, will face World No 5 Rafael Nadal, 35, Spain, in quarter-final on January 25, 2022. Nadal leads Shapovalov 3-2 Head to Head. The Canadian has won only one career title.
