New Delhi : Coronavirus (COVID-19) death toll jumped to 4,531 in India at 8 am on May 28, 2020, an increase of 194 during last 24 hours. Maharashtra alone accounts for 1,897 deaths followed by Gujarat with 938 deaths. Madhya Pradesh (MP) has reported 313 deaths till date while Delhi accounts for 303 deaths.

West Bengal has reported 289 deaths so far while Rajasthan has reported 173 deaths and UP 182 deaths. Tamilnadu has reported 133 deaths followed by Telengana with 63 deaths. Andhra Pradesh has recorded 58 deaths so far while Karnataka has reported 47 deaths. COVID-19 death toll break-up in other States?UT is : Punjab (40), J&K (26), Haryana (18), Bihar (15), Odisha (7), Kerala (7), Himachal Ptradesh (5), Assam (4), Chandigarh (4),  Jharkhand (4), Uttarakhand (4), Meghalaya (1).

On the positive side, the number of Coronavirus patients cured/discharged has surged to 67,691 in India, an increase of 3,266 during last 24 hours indicating a good recovery rate. The patients cured/discharged include 17,918 in Maharashtra, 7,549 in Gujarat, 7,264 in Delhi, 3,927 in MP, 4,457 in Rajasthan, 9,909 in Tamilnadu, 1,284 in Telengana, 3,991 in UP, 1,578 in West Bengal, 1,918 in Punjab, 1,083 in Bihar, 2,057 in Andhra Pradesh, 838 in Haryana, 854 in J&K, 185 in Jharkhand, 781 in Karnataka, 552 in Kerala, 783 in Odisha, 165 in Tripura, and 87 in Assam.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space Dr Jitendra Singh on May 27, 2020, reviewed the status of COVID 19 outbreak in J & K in view of large number of persons returning back to the UT and spike in cases. The review was held through Video Conference with the Mission Director, National Health Mission, Director Health Services, Jammu and Kashmir Division, and all CMOs of the districts, according to a PIB release.

The Health officials briefed the Minister about the ground level reports and said that the spike was a passing phases as it was linked to the large number of persons returning to the UT who were mandatorily being tested for COVID 19. They informed that the detection of COVID 19 cases was a positive sign as the persons tested positive were kept in quarantine and the spread was arrested. They also informed that the testing capacity has been enhanced and now over 10,000 tests per million are being conducted. The Health authorities are using an ICMR App by which the Return Time of the testing process has been reduced to three days.

Dr  Singh was informed that contact tracing for all positive tested persons was being done on a largescale to trace the COVID 19 patients who may have come in contact with COVID 19 positive persons.
