Coric, Khachanov, Verdasco enter 2nd round of Italian Open

Patna : World No 15 Borna Coric, 22, Croatia, beat World No 30 Felix Auger-Aliassime, 18, Canada, in a three-set thriller to advance to the 2nd round of Italian Open at Foro Italico, Rome, Italy, on May 13, 2019. Coric defeated Aliassime 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 coming from behind.

Coric broke Aliassime’s service thrice in the match while the latter broke his service once. Coric fired 5 Aces in the match to 7 by Aliassime. But, Aliassime committed 7 double faults to 1 by Coric. Both the players won 3 games each in a row during the match. Corin won 67 service points to 61 by Aliassime.

World No 13 Karen Khachanov, 22, Russia, also entered the second round defeating World No 67 Lorenzo Sonego, 24, Italy, in three sets 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in the first round. Lorenzo though fired 12 Aces in the match to 3 by Khachanov. Khachanov committed 8 double faults in the match to 3 by Sonego. Khachanov broke Sonego’s service thrice in the match while the latter broke his service only once.

World No 38 Fernando Verdasco, 35, Spain, upset World No 27 Kyle Edmund, 24, Britain, in three-sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to enter the 2nd round of the clay court tournament. Verdasco broke Edmund’s service 5 times in the match while the latter broke his service thrice. Verdasco fired 5 Aces in the match to 4 by Edmund. Edmund committed 5 double faults to 3 by Verdasco. Edmund though won 60 service points to 52 by Verdasco.

World No 22 Denis Shapovalov, 20, Canada, defeated World No 41 Pablo Carreno Busta, 27, Spain, 6-3, 7-6 to enter the 2nd round. World No 19 Marco Cecchinato, 26, Italy, defeated World No  26 Alex de Mknaur, 20, Australia, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to enter the 2nd round.
