Collins stuns World No 2 Kerber, enters QFs of Australian Open with Barty & Kvitova

Patna : World No 35 in WTA rankings Danielle Rose Collins, 25, USA, stunned World No 2 and 2016 champion Angelique Kerber, 31, Germany, in the 4th round of Australian Open (AO) at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, on January 20, 2019, to enter the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Collins crushed Kerber, the winner of three Grand Slam titles, 6-0, 6-2 in the 4th round. Collins won 6 break points in the match to just 1 by Kerber. She also served 2 Aces to none by her Kerber. Collins’ winning percentage both on her first and second serve ( 65% & 68 %) was much higher than that of Kerber ( 26 % & 56 %). Collins also won 6 games in a row in the match. Kerber also committed 5 double faults to 1 by Collins.

World No 15 Ashleigh Barty, 22, Australia, also entered the quarter-finals of Australian Open 2019 by beating 2008 Champion and World No 30 Maria Sharapova, 31, Russia, in a tough three-set contest 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the 4th round on January 20, 2019. Barty won 4 break points to 2 by Sharapova.  Barty also served 6 Aces in the match to by Sharapova. Barty won 9 games in a row in the match to 3 by Sharapova. Barty’s winning percentage on both her first and second serve was also better than that of her Russian rival. Barty won 57 service points while Sharapova won 49.

Two-time Wimbledon Champion and World No 6 Petra Kvitová, 28, Czech Republic, also entered the quarter-finals of the tournament beating World No 87 Amanda Anisimova, 17, USA, 6-2, 6-1 in the 4th round winning 5 break points in the match besides winning 6 games in a row. Anisimova committed 6 double faults to 1 by Kvitová. Kvitová’s winning percentage on both her first and second serve was also much better than that of Anisimova. Kvitová will face Barty in the quarter-finals on January 22, 2019.
