Patna : In a massive upset, World Number 59 Hyeon Chung, 21, South Korea, defeated Number 4 seed Aleaxander Zverev, 20, Germany, in a five set encounter 5-7, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 on January 20, 2018, to enter the last 16 of Australian Open (AO) 2018, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. Chung defeated a top 10 ranked player for the first time in his career. Zverev complained about lack of light during the match.
But, Number 5 seed Dominc Thiem, 24, Austria, entered the fourth round defeating Number 26 seed Adrian Mannarino, 29, France, 6-4. 6-2, 7-5 in the third round. Number 25 seed Fabio Fognini, 30, also entered the round of 16 defeating Julien Benneteau, France, in a tough five-set contest 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the third round.
In the Women’s section, hard- hitting Naomi Osaka, Japan, stunned Number 18 seed Ashleigh Barty, Australia, 6-4, 6-2 to enter the fourth round. Osaka is ranked 72 in the WTArankings.
