Patna : The Election Commission of India (ECI) will on March 26, 2020, hold Biennial Elections to the Council of States to fill up 55 seats of Members retiring in April 2020. The term of office of 55 members of the Rajya Sabha (RS) elected from 17 States is due to expire on their retirement in April, 2020.
While twenty-two RS Members including 7 from Maharashtra, 4 from Odisha, 6 from Tamil Nadu, and 5 from West Bengal will retire on April 2, 2020, 32 Members including 4 from Andhra Pradesh, 2 from Telangana, 3 from Assam, 5 from Bihar, 2 from Chhattisgarh, 4 from Gujarat, 2 from Haryana, 1 from Himachal Pradesh, 2 from Jharkhand, 3 from Madhya Pradesh, 1 from Manipur, and 3 from Rajasthan, will retire on April 9, 2020. One RS Member from Meghalaya will retire on April 12, 2020.
The ECI will issue poll notification on March 6, 2020, and last date of filing nominations is March 13, 2020. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on March 16 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature s is March 18, 2020.
The Commission has directed that for the purpose of marking preference(s) on the ballot paper only integrated violet colour sketch pen(s) of pre-fixed specification, provided by the Returning Officer, shall be used. No other pen shall, under any circumstances, be used in the above said elections, according to a PIB release.
