Patna : World No 15 Bianca Andreescu, 19, Canada, stunned six-time champions and World No 8 Serena Williams, 37, USA, in the final to win US Open title, her first Grand Slam singles title, at Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York City, USA, on September 8, 2019, late night, thwarting the American’s bid to win a record equalling 24th Grand Slam title. Biance is the Canadian to win a Grand Slam title. Serena had lost to Naomi Osaka, Japan, in 2018 final while she lost to Simona Halep, Romania, in the Wimbledon final in 2019.

Bianca upset Serena in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 in the final in 1hr 40 minutes. The Canadian won 6 break points to 3 by Serena. Both the players won 4 games each in a row in the match. Both of them also won 38 service points each in the match. But, Serena committed 8 double faults to 3 by the Canadian. Serena, however, fired 9 Aces in the match to 5 by the Canadian.  Serena’s winning percentage on her first and second serve was 80% and 36 % respective compared to Bianca’s 64% and 45 %. Serena but made 33 unforced errors in the match though she also won 33 winners in the match. At one stage in the 2nd set, Serena was trailing 1-5.

Bianca and Serena had also clashed in the final of Rogers Cup, a Premier WTA event at Toronto, Canada, on August 11, 2019, where the former triumphed after the American retired due to injury trailing 1-3.

Bianca will jump several ladders in the WTA rankings to be released on September  9, 2019, after winning the US Open title. Bianca had failed to qualify for the US Open main draw in 2018 losing in the qualifiers.
