Ara : Resentment prevails among the family members and acquaintances of a woman over inaction of Bhojpur police in a dowry related case despite lapse of three weeks.

Shobha Devi, daughter of a retired teacher Ved Vidhi Sharma of Vashishth Nagar locality under Nawada police station, Ara,  was married to Vikas Gaurav of Doman Dihara under Piro police station on June 30, 2019. About Rs 25 lakh was spent on the marriage. Vikas Gaurav is a Loco Pilot in the Indian railway posted at Sabarmati in Gujarat.

At the time of marriage, the kin of bridegroom had demanded an SUV but Shobha’s was helpless in fulfilling their demands. The relatives and family members persuaded the family members of bridegroom and they consented to take Sobha with them to their place at Khagaul, Patna, where they lived at a rented house but their demands for an SUV did not stop.  When their demands were not fulfilled, they started torturing her.

SHO, Ara Women’s police station, quoting the FIR, said that Sobha’s husband Vikas Gaurav under a well-planned conspiracy, took her to Sabarmati in March 2020 where he tortured her even physically. She alleged that he tried to strangulate her to death on March 27, 2020, and suggested her to get the flat at Varanasi in his name if her father was unable to give an SUV but somehow she contacted her brother-in-law (jija ji) who was also posted in Gujarat as veterinary doctor who came to her rescue next day and with the help of police took her to his residence. Shobha Devi reached her father’s house at Vashishth Nagar after the rail service was restored and a named FIR was lodged with Ara Women’s police station in July 2020.
