Patna : World No 12 Belinda Bencic, 22, Switzerland, stunned top seed and defending champion Naomi Osaka, 21, Japan, in the Round of 16 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York City, USA, to enter the women’s singles quarter-finals of US Open on September 2, 2019, night.
Bencic beat World No 1 Osaka, also the reigning Australian Open Champion, 7-5, 6-4 in the Round of 16.Osaka though fired 9 Aces in the match to 2 by Bencic. Bencic, however, won 3 break points in the match to 1 by Osaka. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match. Bencic won 41 service points to 40 by the World No 1. Bencic’s winning percentage both on her first and second serve ( 82 % & 81%) was much higher than that of Osaka ( 70% & 48 %).
Bencic will face World No 23 Donna Vekic, 23, Croatia, in the quarter-finals on September 4, 2019. Vekic defeated World No 30 Julia Gorges, 30, Germany, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the Round of 16.
World No 5 Elina Svitolina, 24, Ukraine, beat World No 9 Madison Keys, 24, USA, 7-5, 6-4 to enter the quarter-finals.
