Patna : Australia defeated England by an innings and 123 runs in the fifth and final Ashes test at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney, Australia, on the fifth day day on January 8, 2018, wrapping the five-match Ashes series 4-0 regaining the Ashes. England, who had scored 346 in the first innings, were all out for a paltry 180 in their second innings with Captain Joe Root retired hurt on 58.  Australia had declared their first innings at 649/7.

Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins, who took 8 wickets in the test, was declared Player of Match, while Captain Steven Smith, who scored 687 runs in seven innings in the five-match Ashes series, was declared Player of the Series. All the five tests of the series were finished on the fifth day the first time since 1994-95. Cummins took 23 wickets in the series while  Mitchell Starc took 22 wickets and Josh Hazlewood 21 wickets. Spinner Nathan Lyon also took 21 wickets.
