Patna :  Pakistan were all out for 240 in 86.2 overs in their first innings on Day 1 of the first test against Australia at The Gabba, Brisbane, Australia, on November 21, 2019, with Asad Shafiq scoring 76 in 134 balls hitting 7 fours and opener Azhar Ali (captain) scoring 39 in 104 balls with 5 fours. Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat.

Pakistan openers Shan Masood and Azhar Ali gave a solid start to the team with a 75 run first wicket stand in 33 overs. Masood was first to go making it 75/1 and Azhar followed him two balls later. Masood fell to fast bowler Pat Cummins for 27 in 97 balls with 3 fours while Azhar  fell to Josh Hazlewood  making it 75/2. Haris Sohail to fast bowler Mitchell Starc for 1 making it 77/3. Babar Azal fell to Hazlewood for 1 making it 74/4. Iftikhar Ahmed fell to spinner Nathan Lyon for 7 and it was 94/5 after 45.1 over.

Shafiq and Mohammad Rizwan then added 49 runs for the 6th wicket. Rizwan fell to Cummins for 37 in 34 balls with 7 four and it was 143/6. Shafiq and spinner Yasir Shah then added 84 runs for the 7th wicket. Yasir fell to Starc for 27 making it 227/7. Shaheen Afridi fell to Starc for a duck making it 227/8. Asad Shafiq fell to Cummins for 76 making it 227/9. Pakistan thus lost three wickets at 227. Naseem Shah, Pakistan’s new fast bowler, fell to Starc for 7.

For Australia, Mitchell Starc took 4/52 in 18.2 overs while Pat Cummins took 3/60 in 22 overs. Josh Hazlewood took 2/46 in 20 overs while Lyon took 1/40 in 17 overs.
