Patna : Australia crushed Sri Lanka (SL) by an innings and 40 runs in the first test at The Gabba, Brisbane, Australia, in the second session on the third day of the match on January 26, 2019, with fast bowler Pat Cummins taking 6/23 in 15 overs and Jhye Richardson 2/19 in 13 overs. Cummins had taken 4/49 in Sri Lanka’s first innings. Cummins was named Player of the Match for taking 10 wickets in the match. Mitchell Starc bowled at brutal ace in the second innings touching even 150 kmph but failed to take any wicket in 14 overs

Opting to bat after winning the toss, Sri Lanka were all out for 144 in their first innings and 139 in their second innings. Australia had scored 323 in their first innings.

For Sri Lanka, opener Lahiru Thirimann was the top scorer with 32 runs while wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella and fast bowler Suranga Lakmal scored 24 each in the second innings. Captain Dinesh Chandimal fell for duck to Pat Cummins. Kusal Mendis also fell to Cummins for 1.  Chandimal had scored 5 in the first innings.
