Patna : Australia defeated South Africa (SA) by 5 wickets in a close ICC T20 World Cup Group 1 match at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, UAE, on October 23, 2021, with all-rounder Marcus Stoinis scoring an unbeaten 24 in 16 balls with 3 fours and Matthew Wade (wk) scoring an unbeaten 15 in 10 balls hitting 2 fours. Stoinis and Wade added 40 runs in their unbroken stand for the 6th wicket. Australia had won the toss and opted to bowl. Batting first, SA had scored 118/9 in 20 overs. Fast medium bowler Josh Hazlewood was named Player Of The Match for taking 2/19 in 4 overs.

Chasing a target of 119 runs, Australia scored 121/5 in 19.4 overs with Steven Smith scoring 35 in 34 balls with 3 fours  while all-rounder Glenn Maxwell scored 18 in 21 balls with 1 four. Smith fell to fast bowler Anrich Nortje while Maxwell fell to spinner Tabraiz Shamsi. Australia had lost their first wicket that of opener Aaron Finch ( captain) at 4. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh fell to spinner Keshav Maharaj for 11.

SA lost their first wicket that of opener Temba Bavuma ( captain) at 13. Bavuma fell to Glenn Maxwell for 12. Rassie van der Dussen fell to fast bowler Josh Hazlewood for 2 making it 16/2.
