Patna : Chasing a huge victory of 612, Australia were 88/3 at stumps on day four of the fourth cricket test against South Africa at Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa, on April 2, 2018, with Peter Handscomb batting on 23 in 30 balls with 4 fours and Shaun Marsh batting on 7 in 19 balls.

Opener Joe Burns was out for 42 in 80 balls hitting 5 fours and a six while his opening partner Matt Renshaw was out for 5. Australia need to score 524 more runs on fifth and final day on April 3 to win the match.

South African fast bowler Morne Morkel, who is playing his last test, took 2/18 in 8 overs while spinner Keshav Maharaj took 1/45 in 10 overs.

Earlier, South Africa, who had scored 488 runs in their first innings with opener Aiden Markram scoring 152, declared their second innings at 344/6 during tea with Captain Faf du Plessis scoring 120 runs, his 8th test century, and opener Dean Elgar scoring 81. Temba Bavuma, who had remained unbeaten on 95 in the first innings, remained unbeaten on 35. Vernon Philander remained not out on 33. Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins took 4/58 while spinner Nathan Lyon took 2/116.
