Patna : Australia were 257/4 in 90 overs in their first innings in 2nd test against New Zealand (NZ) at stumps on Day 1 at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, Australia, on December 26, 2019, with Steven Smith unbeaten on 77 in 192 balls hitting 8 fours and a six and Travis Head batting on 25 in 56 balls hitting 3 fours. Australia scored 29 runs in last 10 overs. NZ won the toss but opted to bowl.

Australia lost their first wicket at 1 when opener Joe Burns fell to fast bowler Trent Boult for a duck. Australia lost their second wicket at 67 when opener David Warner fell to fast medium bowler Neil Wagner for 41 in 64 balls with 3 fours. Marnus Labuschagne fell to Colin de Grandhomme for 63 in 149 balls with 6 fours and a six making it 144/3. Labuschagne and Smith added 83 runs for the 3rd wicket. Matthew Wade fell to Grandhomme for 38 in 78 balls with 3 fours and it was 216/4. Wade and Smith added 72 runs for the 4th wicket.

For NZ, Colin de Grandhomme 2/48 in 21 overs. Trent Boult and Neil Wagner took one wicket each.
