Patna : Australia were 193/2 in 67 overs at stumps in the fifth Ashes Test at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney, Australia, on the secon day on January 5, 2018, with Captain Steve Smith unbeaten on 44 in 88 balls hitting 3 fours and Usman Khwaja batting on 91 in 204 balls hitting 7 fours and a six. Australia were trailing by 154 runs. Opener David Warner was out for 56 to Jimmy Anderson while Cameron Bancroft was bolwed by Stuar Broad for one.

Khwaja was on course to his first test century in more than a year while Smith crossed 6,000 runs in 111 innings in his 61st test joining West Indies veteran Garfield Sobers as the second fastest to reach the milestone. Australian great Don Bradman had reached the 6,000 run in 68 innings.

Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 233/5, England were all out for 346 on January 5 before lunch in 112.3 overs. Dawid Malan, who was 55 not out at stumps on day one, was out for 62 to fast bowler Mitchell Starc. Tom Curran made 39, Stuard Broad 31 in 32 balls hitting 2 sixes, and Moen Ali 30. For Australia, Pat Cummins took 4/80.
