Gurugram ( Haryana) : Ashleigh Barty, 23, Australia, has become the new World No 1 player with 6,540 points replacing Naomi Osaka, 21, Japan, in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings released on June 24, 2019, after winning the Birmingham Classic title in UK on June 23, 2019. Barty, a former cricketer, though has just a slender lead of 163 points over Osaka ( 6,377 points), who is World No 2. Barty is a third Australian women tennis player to hold World No 1 position.
Karoline Pliskova ( 5,685 points), Czech Republic, and Kiki Bertens (5,425 points), Netherlands, are World No and World 4 respectively. Angelique Kerber, Germany, has jumped one place to be ranked World No 5 with 4,685 points while Petra Kvitová, Czech Republic, has slipped one place to be ranked World No 6 with 4,555 points. Simona Halep, Romania, a former World No 1, is World No 7 with 3,963 points while Elina Svitolina, Ukraine, is World No 8 with 3,868 points.
India No 1 Ankita Raina has slipped 3 places to be ranked World No 171 with 351 points. Karman Kaur Thandi, India, has slipped 4 places to be ranked World No 230 with 240 points.
