Patna : Two time champion Argentina entered the knock out stage of FIFA World Cup 2018 defeating Nigeria 2-1 in a Group D match at Saint Petersburg Stadium, Russia, June 26 late night avoiding exit in the group stages. Argentina are making their 16th appearance in the World Cup.
Striker Lionel Messi and Defender Marcos Rojo scored goals for Argentina in the 14th and 86th minute respectively while Victor Moses scored the loan goal for Nigeria in the 51st minute through penalty. Messi was shown Yellow Card in the 94th minute for wasting time.
Argentina have entered the Round of 16 for the 4th consecutive tournament. They had earlier entered the knock out stage in 2006, 2010, and 2014 FIFA World Cup. Argentina had won World Cup in 1978 and 1986 and had finished runners-up in 1990 and 2014.
Argentina, however, finished the group stage in FIFA World Cup 2018 with just 4 points having lost to Croatia 0-3 and drawing their opening match against Iceland. Croatia topped the Group D with 9 points winning all their 3 matches. Nigeria finished with 3 point while Iceland finished with only 1 point.
