Ara : The indefinite hunger strike by nearly 300 inmates of Ara jail continued for the second consecutive day on March 12, 2018,onday. They went on indefinite hunger strike protesting police highhandedness against them after a video of prisoners smoking Ganja and talking on cellphones went viral on social networking sites besides seeking suspension Ara Jail Superintendent Niranjan Pandit. The prisoners also alleged lack of basic amenities in the jail.

Bhojpur SP Awakash Kumar confirmed continuance of hunger strike by the prisoners and said that the doctors were sent to examine the jail inmates. He said that the jail administration was persuading the prisoners to call off their strike but to no avail so far.

Jail Superintendent Niranjan Pandit said that the inmates got aggressive after the SDO and the SDPO conducted raid inside the jail on March 9, 2018. The inmates had also clashed with police thevery next day.

Meanwhile, the two persons seen in the viral video talking on cellphones inside the Ara jail were identified on March 12 as Deepak and Pintu. Deepak is at present on bail while Pintu is in jail. Though the Bhojpur district administration refrained from disclosing their names, steps have initiated to confirm their presence in the video.

On the other hand, all the 44 inmates of Ara Remand Home went on indefinite fast on March 12 to protest lack of basic amenities and mosquito nets at the Remand Home. But,  Bhojpur SP Awkash Kumar refrained from confirming it.
