Motihari : In an important development on March 11, 2017, Motihari Nagar Parishad’s Chief Ward Councillor Prakash Asthana and Deputy Chief Ward Councillor Mohibul Haque and all other ward councillors resigned from their respective posts. All the 38 ward councillors including Asthana and Haque resigned en masse and sent letter their resignation letter to the Principal Secretary, Urban Development and Housing Depatment (UDHD), requesting him to accept the same.

All the ward councillors have resigned in protest against East Champaran district administration’s failure to stop the agitating retrenched contract Safai Karmchari ( sweepers) from disturbing the functioning of Motihari Nagar Parishad, according to a letter sent by the councillors to the Chief  Secretary. They have charged Motihari SDO with working against the direction of East Champaran DM at the behest of  a Nagar Parishad employee Bharat Ram. They said that DM had ordered for lodging FIR against the agitating  Safai Karmchari but the SDO did not comply with it.

The Safarai Karmchari are on strike since February 16, 2017, affecting the works of the Nagar Parishad  including tax collection. Chief Councillor Asthana said that it was extremely difficult to function in view of the indifferent attitude of the district administration officials. Asthana said that all the ward councillors had resigned in public interest
